Meet the Team
David Gordon, Partner
David qualified as a Chartered Accountant with BDO in 1985 and spent two years as a Business Adviser with Ernst & Young and three years as Group Financial Controller with Dunedin Fund Managers Ltd before joining KPMG in 1991 to specialise in tax. He qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in November 1991 and spent 10 years with KPMG latterly as Senior Tax Manager. David also spent 4 years with Moores Rowland as a Senior Tax Manager. In 2004 he joined Cook & Co Limited as Tax partner with the remit to develop a tax practice within the firm.
David has experience in advising limited companies and individuals on tax compliance and tax planning matters. This ranges from corporate and group tax planning, employee remuneration issues including share schemes, corporate reorganisation and restructuring, VAT and some international tax planning. In relation to individuals he has experience in capital gains tax and inheritance tax planning, residence and domicile planning and general pre 5 April tax planning.
Margaret Logan, Partner
Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1981, Margaret spent two years as an audit senior before moving to BDO in 1984 where she was ultimately an audit manager. While her children were small she worked as a subcontractor to several firms, including Cook & Co Limited, involved in both audit and accounts preparation. At the same time she was involved with ICAS in the student training process, as an exam marker and examiner.
In 2001 she became a partner in SRG, a practice with offices in Glasgow and London, advising owner managed businesses, sole traders, partnerships and charities. She joined Cook & Co Limited as a partner in May 2008, bringing her clients with her.
Margaret has a wealth of experience in dealing with audit and accounts preparation with recent involvement in the audits of property investment companies, a property development group, a number of manufacturing companies, a food retailing company and several charities and providing monthly management accounts to a number of limited partnerships in the traded endowment policy market, a Michelin starred restaurant, a large plant hire company and a charity in the field of providing facilities for artists. In addition she advises a number of professional partnerships and sole traders.
Alan Young, Senior Manager
Alan qualified with a small firm in Ayrshire before moving to Johnston Carmichael in 2008 as a Senior Audit Manager. Alan joined Cook & Co Limited in February 2011 as a Senior Manager in audit and accountancy.
Alan has extensive experience in audit and accounts preparation for small, medium and large sized owner managed businesses and groups across a wide range of industry sectors including retail, property, manufacturing and investment companies. In addition he also has significant experience in assisting clients with projections and forecasts for inclusion in business plans, grant applications and funding requests for business acquisitions. He has also been involved in advising businesses on restructuring.
Sue trained as a Chartered Accountant at Peat Marwick Mitchell, now KPMG, qualifying in 1986. Later that year she moved to their Glasgow office where she specialised in tax. She qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser and became a senior tax manager in 1990.
After two years as a self-employed consultant and tax lecturer while her children were young, Sue joined Macmillan & Co, a small firm which merged with Campbell Dallas in 2005, leaving there in July 2007 to assist Cook & Co Limited’s tax consultancy section.
Sue has a wide breadth of expertise in all taxes but has specialised recently in corporation tax for owner-managed businesses together with the personal tax issues for proprietors. This involves management of routine compliance matters for the firm’s clients together with planning for one-off transactions. She has also developed a broad knowledge of VAT, particularly with regard to property transactions.
Paula’s career in tax began in 1984 in Touche Ross & Co. She joined Coopers and Lybrand five years later and qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 1989. Two years later she became a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners following her work on offshore trusts. When her children were small she moved to Rutherford Manson Dowds as a personal tax manager and then worked part-time for KPMG for the next five years, dealing mainly with expatriate tax issues.
Paula joined Cook and Co in 2006 and deals with high net worth individuals and in particular capital gains and inheritance tax planning. She also specialises in tax planning for non residents and non domiciliaries.
